Hi, my name is Scott Williams. I'm an MBA and I've lived in Austin for 29 years.
I am in favor of short term rentals-
No need special laws which apply to one property owner and not another.
We have laws against excessive occupancy, cars,
noise, alcohol, drugs, reckless driving, unrestrained dogs and so on. If there are problems, we need to simply enforce these laws.
Last year, of nearly 200,000 short term tennants in Austin, only 8 complaints were filed.
The number of complaints against owner occupied properties was hundreds of times higher.
The length of the rental creates no problems. In fact, if there is a problem, that tennant is gone in one day. No so for long term leases
In past 10 years, I have travelled to Europe, Indonesian, South America. I always stay in a home, or similar occomdation IN THE CITY not on the 30th floor of a hotel.
For the more than 200,000 well educated, progressive young people who choose to rent a house rather than a hotel room when they visit Austin, this is one of the core identities of our city. This is part of what makes us a great, innovative progressive community.
And it brings hundreds of thousands of dollars into our local econonmy which is part of the reason that we have thrived during the huge economic catastrophe that plagues the rest of the nation.
I completely sympathize with anyone who has ever been inconvenienced by another neighbor. I don't want excessive noise, traffic and such near my home so Let's find a solution with out killing this essential core component of a modern urban environment.
